Sea Can Shanty by Dennis Hughes During global pandemics Near our homes we stay But many products that we use Are made quite far away The seaports they are all backed up Shanghai to San Francisco With all our breakfast cereals From Kellogg’s to Nabisco Sea containers in short supply Cause constipated shipping Many miles the bottle travelled That you are now sipping Cargo ships are quite costly Buy local when you can But when it comes to imports On the docks stacks of sea cans Sea cans - shipping containers That ply the open sea Stackable steel boxes that Bring stuff to you and me Cranes lift them onto freight trucks That roll to your neighborhood Sing the sea can shanty An ode to foreign goods From the Mediterranean Come sardines and salami Shipped across the Atlantic To New York and Miami Through the Suez Canal they go To many baby boomers And every generation of American consumers More products cross the Pacific Than any other ocean Giant ships from here to Asia Ceaselessly in motion Electronics and narcotics From the Pacific Rim Big box stores and shopping malls All filled up to the brim Sea cans - shipping containers That ply the open sea Stackable steel boxes that Bring stuff to you and me Cranes lift them onto freight trucks That roll to your neighborhood Sing the sea can shanty It’s an ode to foreign goods |
